Twilight real estate photography: why the blue hour sells Marrakech villas

The window opens the moment the sun passes the horizon line, and it closes fast. In Marrakech, between April and September, you have roughly 18 minutes of usable blue hour light. In winter, you get closer to 28. We plan every twilight shoot around civil twilight, not sunset, and we never trust the Weather app — we use Photographer's Ephemeris to confirm the exact moment the sun drops 4° below the horizon, which is when the sky balances with the warm interior lights of the property.

The schedule we use

We arrive 90 minutes before sunset. The first hour is the hard work — getting lights and styling right while we still have ambient daylight to lean on. By the time the sun is 2° above the horizon, the property should be lit, the pool should be brushed, and the team should be in position. From there, we shoot for 18 minutes straight, both exteriors and interiors, with two cameras running. There is no time to change a lens.

• 02T-60 min — interior lights on, exterior lights on, pool on, styling final
• 03T-30 min — wide bracketed exposures for HDR merge later
• 04T-0 (sunset) — 18 minutes of straight shooting, no breaks
• 05T+20 min — back to interiors for the warm window-light shots

Camera settings that hold up

The two most important settings for twilight real estate are your tripod discipline and your white balance. We lock white balance at 4200K — not auto. Auto WB will shift blue to orange or orange to blue between frames, and the edit will fall apart. We shoot at f/8, ISO 100, with a 2-second timer or remote release. The slower shutter speeds (1/2s to 4s) are exactly why we plan around the 18-minute window — any longer and the city lights will bloom past the dynamic range of the sensor.

Questions to ask the agency

Most agencies in Marrakech will book a twilight shoot without owning the lighting kit. We carry 4 LED panels, 2 strobes, 12 gels, and a backup generator. If the photographer arriving for your shoot has anything less, the result will look like a phone shot with a tripod. Ask to see their last three twilight deliveries. If they don't have a library, walk away.
